An amended lawsuit accuses rapper and music mogul Jay-Z of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs after the Video Music Awards in 2000.
Originally filed in October, the civil lawsuit initially accused Combs and a then-unnamed celebrity of sexually assaulting an anonymous plaintiff, referred to as Jane Doe, who says she was 13 at the time of the alleged assault. On December 8, Doe amended the lawsuit to name Jay-Z — whose legal name is Shawn Carter — as the other alleged assailant.
“Defendant Sean Combs, along with his longtime friend and collaborator Shawn Carter, drugged and raped a thirteen-year-old girl at an afterparty following the 2000 Video Music Awards,” Doe’s amended suit alleges. “Another celebrity stood by and watched as Combs and Carter took turns assaulting the minor.”
Carter denied the allegations in a strongly worded statement posted to social media accounts for Roc Nation, the entertainment company Carter founded. The statement was largely addressed to Tony Buzbee, the lawyer who says he is representing more than 100 individuals who were allegedly victimized by Combs, including Doe.
“These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!! Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree?” Carter wrote in his statement. “These alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were the case.” Before Doe’s lawsuit was amended, Buzbee sent Carter a letter requesting mediation to resolve the claims, according to the amended complaint. Carter responded by filing an “utterly frivolous lawsuit,” the complaint alleges.
Teen Vogue has reached out to both Carter and Buzbee for additional comment but has not yet heard back. Combs has denied all allegations against him.
After facing multiple civil lawsuits alleging sexual assault and misconduct, Combs was indicted on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering in September and has been held in jail since. Since his indictment and arrest, even more civil lawsuits have been filed against Combs.
