John Wayne, born Marion Morrison on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa, adopted the nickname “Duke” after his childhood dog. The family moved to Glendale, California, where Wayne’s experiences shaped his values. He attended Glendale High School, excelling in academics, football, and theater, sparking his passion for acting. After a football injury ended his NFL dreams, Wayne worked in local studios, where he met director John Ford, who mentored him. His breakthrough came in 1930 with The Big Trail, marking his transition to John Wayne. His fame soared with iconic films like Stagecoach and True Grit. Despite health struggles, including lung cancer, Wayne’s legacy endures, remembered for both his cinematic achievements and his human side. He passed away on June 11, 1979.
