Donald Trump Gets A Big Win From The Supreme Court In Tariffs Case

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of former President Donald Trump’s administration over President Joe Biden’s in a case involving steel tariffs. USP Holdings had appealed, arguing that lower courts wrongly upheld Trump’s decision to impose the tariffs. The Biden administration opposed USP Holdings and other steel importers, who claimed the tariffs harmed them, while largely keeping the tariffs intact. Scott Paul of the Alliance for American Manufacturing noted that lifting tariffs without a solution could lead to layoffs and plant closures in key states like Pennsylvania and Ohio, with both economic and political consequences. Trump had invoked Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Act, allowing tariffs on imports deemed vital to national security, citing the need to boost U.S. steel production for military and industrial use. The policy strained relations with some allies, though exemptions were granted. The Supreme Court dismissed USP Holdings’ petition without explanation.
