Vegan Orange Tofu
Ingredients:
- 1 block of firm tofu (pressed and cut into cubes)
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp oil (for frying)
- 1 tbsp sesame oil (for the sauce)
- 1/4 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed)
- 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
- 1 tbsp maple syrup (or agave)
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 garlic clove (minced)
- 1-inch piece of ginger (grated)
- 1/2 tsp chili flakes (optional for a spicy kick)
- 1 tbsp orange zest
- 1 tbsp chopped green onions (for garnish)
- Sesame seeds (optional for garnish)
Instructions:
- Prepare the tofu: Press the tofu to remove excess water. Cut it into cubes.
- Coat the tofu: In a bowl, toss the tofu cubes in cornstarch to lightly coat them. This will help them crisp up during frying.
- Fry the tofu: Heat the oil in a non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- Make the sauce: In the same pan, heat the sesame oil over medium heat. Add the garlic, ginger, and chili flakes (if using), sautéing for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the liquids: Stir in the orange juice, soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, and orange zest. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Combine tofu with the sauce: Return the tofu to the pan and toss it in the sauce until well-coated. Let it cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to absorb the flavors.
- Garnish and serve: Serve your orange tofu over rice or noodles, garnished with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
