In one of the most baffling and heartwarming discoveries in recent wildlife history, researchers working deep in the Congo Basin have documented a troop of chimpanzees seemingly attempting to domesticate a group of penguins.
Photographs first captured the unusual behavior when several chimpanzees were seen emerging from the shoreline, each carrying a penguin carefully in their arms. Later, motion-triggered trail cameras showed the same chimps returning to their forest habitat—still holding the birds as if they were prized companions rather than prey.
So far, over thirty penguins have been “relocated” inland. To the astonishment of scientists, none of the birds appear distressed. In fact, field reports describe the penguins being gently fed fruit, groomed, and even petted by their new primate hosts.
Even more remarkable is the involvement of young chimpanzees in this cross-species experiment. Juvenile chimps have been observed chasing after wandering penguins and guiding them back to the troop—behaving almost like tiny shepherds learning to care for a flock.
