Firefighters battled into the night against the wildfire that roared through the affluent Pacific Palisades neighborhood in Southern California on Tuesday, destroying homes and forcing at least 30,000 residents to evacuate.

Officials have warned of devastating losses to come, with the fire expected to remain uncontained into Wednesday morning as already strong winds picked up. The fire had scorched almost 3,000 acres by Tuesday night.

Another blaze in the region, near Pasadena in Eaton Canyon, had โ€œcreated its own firestormโ€ with flying embers igniting at least a dozen spot fires, said Lisa Derderian, a spokeswoman for the city of Pasadena.

The fire started on Tuesday evening and consumed an estimated 1,000 acres by later that night, the Angeles National Forest said. It engulfed several homes and forced more than 100 people to evacuate from a nursing home, some in wheelchairs and on gurneys, officials said.
