Air Fryer Panko-Crusted Fish Tacos with Lime Crema
Ingredients:
For the Fish:
- 1 lb (450g) white fish fillets (such as cod, tilapia, or haddock)
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp milk
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- Cooking spray (for greasing)
For the Lime Crema:
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp lime juice (freshly squeezed)
- 1/2 tsp lime zest (optional)
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp black pepper
- A pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
For the Tacos:
- 8 small corn or flour tortillas
- 1 cup shredded cabbage or slaw mix
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced (optional)
- Lime wedges (for serving)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Lime Crema:
- In a small bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, lime juice, lime zest (if using), garlic powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Stir until smooth and set aside in the fridge to chill while you prepare the fish.
2. Prepare the Fish:
- Pat the fish fillets dry with paper towels. Cut them into taco-sized pieces (about 2-3 inches wide).
3. Set Up the Dredging Station:
- In a shallow dish, combine the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper.
- In another shallow dish, whisk together the egg and milk.
- In a third shallow dish, add the panko breadcrumbs.
4. Bread the Fish:
- Dip each piece of fish into the flour mixture, coating it lightly.
- Then, dip the fish into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.
- Finally, coat the fish in the panko breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to ensure the breadcrumbs stick.
5. Air Fry the Fish:
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 3-5 minutes.
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Arrange the panko-coated fish pieces in a single layer in the basket (you may need to do this in batches depending on the size of your air fryer).
- Air fry the fish at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the fish is golden brown and crispy.
6. Assemble the Tacos:
- Warm the tortillas in the microwave or on a hot skillet for a few seconds.
- Place a few pieces of crispy fish in the center of each tortilla.
- Top with a small amount of shredded cabbage or slaw, cilantro, and red onion (if using).
- Drizzle with the lime crema sauce.
7. Serve:
- Serve the tacos with lime wedges on the side for an extra burst of fresh lime flavor.
Tips:
- Feel free to customize the toppings. You can add avocado slices, tomatoes, or a drizzle of hot sauce for extra flavor.
- If you don’t want to fry the fish in batches, cook it in multiple layers, but be sure to check for crispiness and even cooking.
