Quick Maple Bars
Ingredients
For the Bars:
- 1 can of refrigerated biscuit dough (like Pillsbury Grands or any similar brand)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Maple Glaze:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- ¼ cup pure maple syrup (or maple extract for a stronger flavor)
- 2-3 tablespoons milk (to thin the glaze)
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional Add-Ins:
- 1 teaspoon maple extract for a stronger maple flavor
- ¼ cup chopped cooked bacon for a sweet-savory topping
For Serving:
- Serve warm with coffee or milk
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- Remove the biscuit dough from the can and separate the individual biscuits.
- Using your hands, gently shape each biscuit into a rectangular bar by stretching it out slightly. Set aside.
Step 2: Heat the Oil
- In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough into the oil—if it sizzles and rises to the top, the oil is ready.
Step 3: Fry the Bars
- Carefully place the shaped dough into the hot oil, frying 2-3 bars at a time. Fry for about 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Use tongs to remove the fried bars from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
- Repeat with the remaining bars.
Step 4: Make the Maple Glaze
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, melted butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually add milk (1 tablespoon at a time) until the glaze reaches your desired consistency—it should be thick enough to coat the bars but thin enough to drizzle easily.
Step 5: Glaze the Bars
- Dip the top of each fried bar into the maple glaze, allowing the excess to drip off.
- Place the glazed bars on a cooling rack set over a baking sheet to catch any drips.
- For a sweet-savory twist, sprinkle the glazed bars with chopped bacon if desired.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
- Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.
- Enjoy these Quick Maple Bars warm with a cup of coffee, tea, or milk.
Cooking Notes
- Dough: If you prefer to make homemade dough, you can use a classic yeast dough recipe instead of refrigerated biscuit dough, though this will take longer.
- Maple Syrup: For the best flavor, use pure maple syrup rather than pancake syrup. You can also use maple extract for a stronger maple flavor.
